What is androgenetic alopecia?
Androgenetic alopecia is a result of the sensitivity of hair follicles to androgens. It is the most common cause of hair loss, found in 70% of men and 40% of women in certain periods of their lives. In men, it usually takes the form of a hairline receding at the temples, and baldness at the top of the head, and in women the condition manifests as diffused hair thinning on the top of the scalp. In men, it often leads to complete baldness. This effect is rarely seen in women.
Studies demonstrate that the main factor behind androgenetic alopecia is testosterone, and more precisely its derivative: dihydrotestosterone (DHT). These are male hormones, androgens, found mostly in men, but also in women.
Androgens play an important role in the sexual development of men, from birth to puberty. They regulate the activity of sebaceous glands, apocrine sweat glands, and the libido. With age, androgens stimulate facial hair growth, but also inhibit the growth of hair on the temples and at the top of the scalp. This is referred to as the “androgen paradox”.
The problem of alopecia also affects women, with an additional factor contributing to the defect (apart from the excess of androgens) being a disturbed balance between the female and male sex hormones. Hair loss in women is additionally increased by obesity, hypothyroidism and hormonal contraception. Dihydrotestosterone gradually weakens the hair roots (they become thinner and weaker, which is the first sign of balding). Simultaneously, its effect results in a shorter anagen phase, and an extended telogen phase, so the hair grows slower and is shorter.
It is important that dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is produced via testosterone transformation mediated by a catalyst enzyme, 5α-reductase. 5α-reductase is found in sebaceous glands near hair follicles. Dihydrotestosterone is responsible for miniaturisation of hair follicles, which results in their reduction and hair strand thinning. A shorter life of the hair = a quicker transition to the shedding phase. Men with androgenetic alopecia usually have higher 5α-reductase levels. The highest concentration of 5α-reductase is observed on the top of the head.

During a single session, when the patient is both the donor and the recipient of the autologous transplant, we can stimulate the area subjected to the procedure with progenitor cells and growth factors obtained from the transplant collection site. The technique is based on clinical studies demonstrating a high concentration of the cells obtained from solid tissues. Using a calibrated mechanical process and filtration, we can achieve a high concentration of progenitor cells and other precursor elements, including stem cells. How does REGENERA ACTIVA® work?
The Regenera Activa® procedure is very simple, and it usually takes 20-30 minutes. In the first stage, the doctor will collect a small skin sample (one to three biopsies of 2.5 mm in diameter) from the hairline at the nape area. This region is the least susceptible to androgenetic alopecia. The small size of the sample enables a spontaneous healing of the graft collection site. This process is completely painless, as the doctor will anaesthetise the biopsy area with lidocaine.
In the second stage the doctor will use a special device to isolate the progenitor cells, stem cells and growth factors demonstrating regenerative properties from your tissue sample.This suspension will be applied to your scalp around the hair follicles with the use of mesotherapy to initiate the reconstruction processes.

How often do I repeat the procedure?
REGENERA ACTIVA® is performed only once, in a single session. There is no need for a series of procedures. Regenera Activa may be repeated after 2-3 years, to prevent further hair loss and progressive androgenetic alopecia.
